Course exams and how they affect grades

SubSchool has two different exam mechanisms. An exam-preparation course uses entry and final diagnostics. An ordinary course may designate one lesson assignment as a weighted course exam. Do not describe one mechanism as the other.

Step 1. Choose whether the course prepares for a named exam

In the course foundation, select an Exam only when the whole course prepares learners for that exam and an eligible generated exam pool exists. This setting powers an entry/final comparison; leaving it empty creates a normal course.

Step 2. Understand the entry exam

In an exam-preparation course, the entry exam becomes required after the learner has opened roughly 20% of the course. It draws diagnostic tasks from the exam pool. Its purpose is to establish baseline strengths, weaknesses, and difficulty data; it is not the weighted lesson assignment described below.

Step 3. Understand the final exam

The final exam becomes available after the entry exam is completed and the learner reaches roughly 80% progress. It uses a different draw from the pool. Completion supports effectiveness comparison and may be part of certificate eligibility, while the ordinary assignment average remains a separate metric.

Step 4. Create a weighted course-exam lesson

For an ordinary or exam-preparation course, open a lesson editor, attach an exercise set, enable This lesson is a course exam, and choose a weight from 20% to 80%. Only one lesson can hold this role. If another exists, the replacement confirmation explicitly removes the old designation.

Step 5. Set the grade calculation mode

In course settings, Completed assignments only averages submitted work; All assignments counts missing work as zero. When a weighted course-exam lesson exists, its result receives the selected percentage and ordinary assignments share the remaining percentage. For example, a 40% exam combines 40% exam score with 60% ordinary-assignment average. Do not set a weight until the exam set and grading criteria are reviewed.

Step 6. Review results and certificate effects

Open Stats and the learner. Read entry and final diagnostics, the weighted course-exam result, ordinary assignment average, and progress as separate values. Course certificate settings can require minimum progress, minimum average grade, and completion of the weighted exam; verify all enabled requirements in a learner test account.
