Practice should not appear only at the end of the course. Place it throughout the sequence. Early practice can be highly supported; later practice can require more independence. This gradual release helps you see where learners need another explanation, a different example, or additional time.

A source document tells learners what exists. Instructional design gives them a structured chance to notice it, understand it, try it, receive feedback, and use it again.

Step 7: Add checks for understanding and feedback points

Checks for understanding do not need to be high-stakes or time-consuming. Their purpose is to help teachers and learners decide what should happen next. A one-question explanation, a short scenario response, an error-spotting activity, or a confidence rating can reveal misconceptions that a completion tick will miss.

Plan feedback at the points where it can affect the next attempt. For a complex task, learners may benefit from feedback on planning or first drafts rather than only on final submissions. For self-paced courses, provide clear success criteria, examples of stronger and weaker responses where appropriate, and prompts that help learners review their own work.
