4. Identify gaps before learners find them

Gaps do not always require new video. A short written explanation, labelled example, downloadable worksheet, self-check quiz, discussion prompt, or brief teacher-recorded update may be the better format. Choose the format that best supports the learning task rather than adding video by default.

5. Add homework that creates useful practice

Homework and independent tasks should give learners a reason to retrieve, apply, adapt, or reflect on what they have learned. “Watch the next video” may move the course forward, but it does not by itself show whether the learner can use the idea.

Match the task to the lesson outcome. If learners are studying a process, ask them to perform one step and explain their choice. If they are learning to identify features, use short examples and ask them to justify their answers. If they are building a larger project, give them a milestone that contributes to the final product.

  • Guided practice: complete a structured example with prompts or a model.
  • Independent application: use the skill in a new but appropriate context.

Keep instructions concrete. State what learners should submit or produce, how long they should spend, what good work should include, and what to do if they get stuck. If a task is optional, say so clearly. If it is essential to later learning, explain why.

6. Build a course experience, then plan the launch

Before launch, experience the course as a learner would. Start from the welcome message, open each module in sequence, complete the tasks, and note every point where a learner could become confused or lose momentum. This review often reveals missing links, unclear instructions, inconsistent terminology, or a workload that is unrealistic for the intended audience.

Your launch materials should answer a learner’s practical questions: who the course is for, what it covers, what learners will need, how much time it may require, what format the learning takes, and how they can get support. Describe outcomes accurately and avoid presenting the course as a guaranteed route to a particular grade, qualification, job, or other result.

Consider a small pilot or limited first cohort when possible. Early learners can help you identify unclear lessons, technical problems, and assignments that need better instructions.
